Training

Getting stronger but still look the same?

135 lb for 6 reps, then 135 lb for 9 reps: that's progress.

When you start taking the gym seriously, there's this frustrating stage where you're showing up, eating better, and hitting PRs, but you still look pretty much the same in the mirror.

So how do you know if what you're doing is actually working?

The mirror can be deceiving, especially when you're used to staring at yourself every day.

But there are other ways to tell whether you're actually making progress.

Let's say a month ago you were benching 135 pounds for 6 reps, and now you're hitting that same weight for 9 reps with better form.

That's progress.

It doesn't automatically mean you've built a ton of muscle, but it's a good sign that your training is working.

Now let's say you're cutting.

Your weight is slowly dropping, your waist is getting smaller, and you're keeping most of your strength.

Even if your abs aren't popping out right now, those are signs that you're heading in the right direction.

If you're bulking, you want to see your weight slowly increase while your lifts get stronger.

But here's where things get tricky.

What happens when your numbers start telling you different things?

Maybe you're getting stronger, but your waist is growing way faster than you wanted.

Or you're losing weight, but your lifts have been consistently getting weaker.

That's when you have to start asking yourself:

Am I pushing hard enough? Am I bulking or cutting too fast?

Am I sleeping enough?

Is my routine actually helping me build the physique I want?

I think this is where a lot of guys get stuck. They either keep doing the same thing even when it's not working, or panic and change everything because of one bad workout.

So my advice is to stop judging your progress based on how you look right now.

Look back at your last few weeks of training, your weight trends, and your progress photos.

If things are moving in the right direction, keep doing what you're doing.

And if they're not, figure out what actually needs to change instead of starting over.

Keep going,

Owen
